It’s been quite a long time since I have traveled very far out of the State of Maine. I believe the last time was in 2006, when I went on a cruise to the Caribbean with my parents and sisters. It’s been way too long, and I am in desperate need of a getaway before the snow starts falling again.
John and I have planned a road trip to Niagara Falls in September, and I cannot wait! While it’s been really exciting to plan where we will be staying, and researching the best restaurants and local attractions, financial security has always been in the back of my mind.
We haven’t even left for our trip yet, and we have already used our credit card online to buy tickets to a concert (did I mention we will be seeing Lorde in Concert at the Artpark??!!), and to book hotel reservations at three different hotels, each in a different state. As we make our way from Maine to New York, a 10.5 hour trip by vehicle, we will also be stopping for gas, stopping at restaurants and convenience stores. That’s a lot of credit card use, at a lot of different places, and that really scares me!
In addition to using our credit cards at so many different locations, I am wary because well, let’s face it, my mind isn’t as focused as it used to be. I think ever since I became a Mom, my mind started trying to focus on a million different things at once, and I have a hard time keeping track of things, like my purse, for instance. I wouldn’t put it past myself to just up and leave my purse some place that’s unsafe while on vacation. I tend to get wrapped up in the moment, and forget about the important things, like making sure my purse is in my possession all of the time.
I have had my credit card information stolen on more than one occasion in the past. One time, someone had attempted to use it to pay a bridge toll in Spain. Another time, someone tried to buy a plane ticket at an Australian airport. These people are having way more fun than I am, and trying to at MY expense! Luckily, my bank did not recognize the charges, since they were out of country, and very unusual for me, and did not let them go through. I can’t say the same thing would happen if my credit card information was stolen and used here in the US, however. I’m always reading in the newspaper, about these employees that steal customers’ credit card information, and then use it to buy a bunch of stuff at local stores. That probably would not send any red flags to my bank, since it is a local purchase, and they could rack up thousands of dollars in charges before I even knew anything was going on.
I really want to be able to relax and enjoy our vacation, without worrying about our financial security. So, I’m being proactive, and signed up for a one-year membership to Lifelock.
