Kayleigh is 11 months old now, and very soon we’ll be ditching her formula and jarred baby foods for milk and real foods.  I’ve been a little confused about this whole weaning process, and Kayleigh’s 1 year check up isn’t until late next month.

I’d really like to speak with a doctor about how to best transition Kayleigh during this period of time.  She’s just a scrawny little peanut, weighing in the 5th percentile at most of her previous appointments, so I want to make sure she is getting all of the nutrients she needs.  I’ve been trying to slowly  introduce her to new foods over the last few months, but I don’t really know if I’m doing it right or not.  I’d really like some reassurance.

It’s really difficult for me to get out to doctor appointments, because John has to take our only vehicle to work every day.  Not only that, but I don’t really want to sit in a waiting room full of sick kids, and expose Kayleigh, and myself, to nasty germs unnecessarily.

I have so many questions running through my mind, and they’ve actually been keeping me awake at night.  I am such a worrier, and the “not knowing what to do” and “am I doing this right?” always make me so anxious.  Do I just start giving her milk one day, with no formula at all?  Do I start by giving her a little bit of milk, and slowly decrease the amount of formula I give her over a period of days?  How much milk should she drink throughout the day? John is lactose intolerant.  Is it ok for Kayleigh to drink almond milk instead of dairy milk?  Should I give her water too?  If so, how much?  Does she need to drink juice?  How much real food does she need, and what foods are recommended for her to eat?  She still doesn’t have any teeth. Will that make it harder for her to eat?  All of these questions and more, just race through my mind all night.

The doctor will see you now… ONLINE!!

I’ve been really stressed out with all of these questions hanging over my head, so I was quite relieved to hear about American Well, which is a great website that connects doctors and patients with live, on-demand video visits.  This seemed like a great solution!  Now I could chat with a doctor about my questions and concerns with weaning Kayleigh from formula and jarred baby food, and not even have to leave the house to do it!

I logged into American Well using the app on my iPhone, searched for doctors by my state, and it brought up several for me to choose from.  I really like that you’re not just thrown in with any available doctor, but you can choose which doctor you want to talk to.

American Well

They have photos of each doctor, and background history as well.  That really puts my mind at ease, knowing that I will feel comfortable with who I choose to talk to. I’m an introvert, and meeting new people is scary and overwhelming for me, so being able to choose which doctor I speak with really helps to calm my nerves.

American Well

After looking through the list of available doctors, I chose the doctor I felt most comfortable with, and within just a few minutes, we were chatting face to face.  I was really nervous about chatting with a doctor online at first.  I don’t do well with video conferencing, as it usually feels very awkward to me, but I felt very comfortable and at ease.  The doctor was very friendly and answered all of my questions.  Now, I have a much better understanding of what I should do to help Kayleigh through the transition of switching from formula to milk, and from jarred baby foods to real foods.

I just had some general questions that I wanted a doctor to answer for me this time, but the next time we are in need of a doctor in the middle of the night, or during a snowstorm, or when I just don’t feel like leaving the house, I will definitely turn to American Well.  They have doctors and nutritionists available 24/7, 365 days a year, and they are very affordable, too!  They can even send prescriptions right to your pharmacy for you!

American WellI will admit, the thought of chatting with a doctor online was a bit strange at first, but you can be assured that your personal information is safe and secure, as American Well is HIPAA- compliant.  You also don’t need to feel like you are cheating on your regular doctor, because all of the physician notes from your American Well visit can be shared with your primary care physician, pediatrician or specialist.  Many insurers are actually starting to cover the cost of telehealth visits for the same or lesser co-pay than traditional in-person visits, too!

For a limited time, you can try American Well for FREE!  Simply use the coupon code SPRING, which is redeemable for a free American Well visit, and good for a whole year if you enroll by the end of April!

Has there ever been a time when you needed a doctor, but couldn’t get in to see one? Would you ever try chatting with a doctor online?

  1. Having two kids, I can think of sooo many times already that this would have come in handy! Thank you for sharing and passing on the coupon code!!

  2. This is pretty awesome. I always knew there were options to chat with doctors online but to add in video so they can truly see the issue. That’s even better.

  3. I’ve never tried an online doctor but I think that it might be the way things are heading-especially in more rural areas where it’s hard to keep doctors. I think some issues can easily be handled this way but others definitely require a face to face meeting.

  4. This is so convenient! Especially if you can’t get in to the doctors right away!

  5. I have heard about this before, but didn’t really know that much about it. This is pretty neat

  6. Your daughter is beautiful! This is an interesting concept. I don’t have kids yet, but I’m sure this resource will come in handy when I do. :)

  7. Very cool! It’s good to know this type of service is out there.

  8. So many questions when you need a doctor right now is tough. But, writing down all your questions is the best thing. Then you know your covered when you finally get to the doctor. One thing my doctor had me do, I think was a big mistake, was telling me to give my son chocolate mild bc he wouldn’t drink white milk. To this day, and he’s 16, he won’t drink white milk. It’s really not good for his teeth, all that chocolate. I don’t think dairy is that good away. Start her out with almond milk and let her get used to that. It’s great protein too. I like the online doc too. Wish I had that when he was little. Good Luck!

  9. I think that this is a great service and something that is very much needed. I hate to admit that I am totally one of those moms who google everything and end half the time end up worrying because of the false information I have read. To actually have a real person behind the scenes at the exact same time I need something answered would be so much more reassuring.

  10. Finally! this is so much better then doing web searched on your childs symptoms!

    Thanks for sharing!

    xoxo, Tara

  49. Maybe I am just too old–but I don’t think I could just chat with a doctor on-line video or not. I do not have children and I can only imagine that this type of service would help to alleviate some of your worries. As for me-since it is only me-I’ll just tough it out until I can get to either my doctor or an ER if it is that critical!
