In a previous post, I mentioned that I was in a very unhappy relationship/marriage for 8 years.  Today, I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment so far, has been getting out of that.

I was a very shy girl, who grew up in a small town, and didn’t date anyone, until I met my ex-husband.  He was my first real boyfriend.  We got along great at first, for a few months.  Then, things started going downhill from there.  This was my first real relationship, so I didn’t have anything to compare it to.  I thought everything we were going through was normal.  I thought things would change.  Only, they didn’t.  I gave him a million chances to try to work on our relationship, and he never put forth any effort.

I was tired, lonely, stressed, and miserable for many years.  One day, I finally decided that I’d had enough.  I had given that relationship everything I had, and it was killing me.  I was so depressed with myself, and my life.  I knew if I didn’t do something at that point, that I would never be happy.  Then, I got out.

Getting out was extremely difficult.  My ex-husband spent money like it was water, and we were up to our eyeballs in debt.  We were 2-3 months behind on everything it seemed.  We owed money to the IRS and Maine Revenue Services.  I ended up taking on pretty much all of that debt through our divorce, only because I knew he would never pay on any of it, and then I’d get stuck paying it in the future anyway, on top of even more interest and late fees.

It took me 2.5 years to get out of that debt.

Not only did we have all that debt, but my car at the time was broken down.  The shifter had broken, and I didn’t have the money to pay to get it fixed.  So, it sat in my driveway for 8 months.  Can you imagine not having a vehicle for 8 months?  Luckily, I lived down the street from work at that time, and was able to walk to work.  My co-worker allowed me to use her vehicle on my lunch breaks, so that I could do some grocery shopping.  It was a rough 8 months, but I got through it somehow.

I had to figure out how to pay for an apartment, and other bills, with just my own income.  It was the most difficult time in my life.  Today, I am debt-free, with the man of my dreams, and happier than I have ever been.

In a couple of months, I’m sure if you ask me the same question, my answer will have changed.  I’m due to give birth to a beautiful baby girl on or around May 8th!  Then, I will say, Kayleigh is my biggest accomplishment!

What is your biggest accomplishment?  Let me know in the comments!
